Guy Fieri and Sammy Hagar Team up to Relaunch Santo Mezquila, An Unexpected Blend of Tequila and Mezcal

Santo Tequila, the brainchild of Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar and “Mayor of Flavortown” Guy Fieri, is bringing back a long-lost bottling.

Back in 2017, Santo hit the market with just one expression, a blend of tequila and mezcal somewhat unsurprisingly dubbed Mezquila. The unprecedented combo was likened by reviewers to flavors of “grilled cactus on an open fire” and notes of “apple, caramel corn and ruddy carrots.”

As the years passed, Santo refocused its efforts on a Blanco, Reposado, Añejo and 110-proof Blanco, gradually relegating Mezquila to the annuls of history. Now, Fieri and Hagar are breathing new life into the twisty concept.

The relaunched spirit blends additive-free blanco tequila with tahona-crushed mezcal Espadin, combining influences from Jalisco and Oaxaca inside a single bottle. Santo says that its new Mezquila balances flavors of “lime, mesquite and grilled pork belly with a round, crisp, dry medium body.”

“I launched Santo Mezquila as my long-awaited return to agave spirits after the sale of Cabo Wabo to Campari Group,” said Hagar in a press release. “My vision was to create something that was totally different, packed with personality, but still created using very traditional techniques that let the agave and a light smoke essence shine through. I like to say ‘Where there is the right amount of smoke, there is flavor.’”

Though Fieri and Hagar are arguably best known for loaded nachos and electric guitar solos, their spirits imprint has taken on a life wholly its own. Within the agave community, Santo is recognized as one of very few confirmed additive-free celebrity-owned brands, placing it on a pedestal unshared by many of its star-studded peers.

If you’re interested in checking out its latest expression, Santo Mezquila can now be picked up online for $69.99.
