Jose Cuervo Teams up With Celebrated Mexican Sculptor for Its Latest Artist-Helmed ‘Reserva de la Familia’ Release

Every year since 1995, Jose Cuervo has teamed up with a different artist to reimagine its annual Reserva de la Familia Extra Añejo release. Over the decades, various designs have paid homage to Frida Kahlo, Art Nouveau, neon psychedelia and more.

This year, Cuervo is collaborating with sculptor, goldsmith and forest conservationist Ana Pellicer to recreate the agave fields of Jalisco in painterly orange and red. Pellicer — recognized worldwide at institutions like the MoMA and Mexico City’s House of Gaga — used a technique called “tempera” to achieve the finish. Fast-drying paints are mixed with a water-soluble emulsion to create a rich, waxy sheen.

“I’ve long admired the craftsmanship, philosophy, and, of course, the quality of Reserva de la Familia, but what I’ve found most special about this precious tequila is how it embodies familial strength,” said Pellicer.

“To be selected as the designer for this year’s collector’s box is a tremendous honor, and I am proud to create artwork that represents the colors, shapes and tone of one of Mexico’s most iconic landscapes for one of the world’s most celebrated tequilas.”

Within the box is, of course, a spirit. Reserva de la Familia Extra Añejo is aged for three years in French and American oak barrels before being mixed with tequila reserves aged for over 30 years. Full of maple, clove, anise and lingering toasted sesame notes, Cuervo releases just 17,000 bottles each year.

The Reserva de la Familia line — which also includes a Blanco and Reposado — was recently expanded with a sherry-finished Cristalino last November.

Pellicer’s rendition of Reserva Extra Añejo will arrive on liquor store shelves this year at an SRP of $190.
