Lunazul Tequila — founded in 2002 by former Jose Cuervo co-owner Francisco Beckmann — is back in the headlines with a trio of new releases.
Following a soft launch last year, the brand has officially unveiled its Primero Collection, complete with a charcoal-filtered Cristalino, smoked Humoso and limited-edition Extra Añejo.
Let’s do a quick rundown:
Primero Cristalino is an eight-time filtered rendition of the brand’s añejo, said to balance flavors of citrus, caramel and eucalyptus. The cristalino technique has taken off like wildfire over the past few years, championed in large part by Beckmann-owned brands including Maestro Dobel, Gran Centenario and Gran Coramino. Aged expressions are charcoal-filtered for clarity, rendering out flavors of oak in favor of an unaged, blanco-like appearance.
Primero Humoso, which translates to “The Smoked One,” is distilled from mesquite-roasted Blue Weber agave. Variations of the technique, sometimes termed Ahumado, have picked up in bits and pieces across the industry following the surgent popularity of mezcal. Lunazul’s version is said to balance “semi-viscous and peppery tasting notes.”
Last but not least, the brand’s limited-edition Extra Añejo is aged for 36 months in Elijah Craig Bourbon barrels. Flavors include cooked orchard fruit, hints of crème brûlée and spicy Mexican dark chocolate.
“We are constantly looking for new ways to express our creativity, engage with our consumers, and evolve the brand accordingly,” says Master Tequilero Francisco Quijano. “The past few years have been such an exciting time for tequila enthusiasts, both long-time aficionados and those just beginning to explore the spirit. We hope to keep them on their toes and give them something new to try.”
The Cristalino and Humoso expressions are currently available at $37.99 each. The Extra Añejo, set to launch in spring, will retail for $59.99.
