  • I can appreciate that this may not be everyone’s preference due to the red wine, but for me it’s excellent.

  • Nose:

Lots of sweet, jammy wine character on the nose. Blueberry jam, blackberries, strawberries, plus clove, vanilla custard and tannin.

  • Taste:

The palate delivers a pleasant mouthfeel — not thin by any means, but not super viscous, either — and some faint heat. Red wine character and tannins ooze across the palate, followed by rich caramel cake, butterscotch and a pinch of clove and tobacco.

  • Finish:

Tobacco, tannin, charred oak, clove, plum and a bit of spearmint gum.

  • Overall:

Red wine is one of the most challenging finishes to keep in check, and High West does a good job here. The wine character is heavy but doesn't drown out the whiskey; red wine is the most prominent part of the palate, but you still get rich bourbon notes and some rye spice. It works and is a very enjoyable whiskey with a solid balance of soft and sweet notes, bitter tannin and jammy red fruit notes.
