Produced in Houston, Texas, Yellow Rose Outlaw Bourbon Whiskey is distilled from a 100% corn mashbill and aged in small American oak barrels. Bottled at 46% ABV, this non-chill filtered, small-batch bourbon is named "Outlaw" for its departure from traditional bourbon norms, having been both distilled and aged entirely in Texas's climate.
The flavor is where things start to go awry. The base is corn sweet and seasoned with vanilla, just as I would expect, but with strong currents of coal smoke and a pine resin astringency. This whiskey also had a rather unpleasant tendency to give me a mild hangover the next day after just one shot’s worth, and that effect even carried over when I cooked with it.
Fiery mouth, smoky notes, dry wood, and hot mint are overwhelming and somewhat astringent. Finish lingers much longer than would be pleasant; hot and tingly, with a redeeming core of corn. Tastes like it was pushed, hard, to be done.
