Red Spot 15-Year-Old Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey is the oldest expression in Mitchell & Son’s Spot series, which also includes Blue Spot (7-year-old cask strength), Green Spot and Yellow Spot (12-year-old). Distilled at Midleton Distillery, it was reintroduced in 2018 after being discontinued in the 1960s. Bottled at 46% ABV and non-chill filtered, it is made from a mix of malted and unmalted barley, triple distilled in copper pot stills. The whiskey is aged in a combination of bourbon, oloroso sherry and Marsala wine casks. Two components mature entirely in bourbon and sherry casks, while a third spends time in bourbon barrels before transferring to Marsala casks for secondary maturation.
If you were to taste all the current Spot whiskies, you would find something different in each of them. Green Spot is mellow, while Yellow Spot is more fruity and tropical. Red Spot is a smooth and warm whisky, perfect for a cold night. It is also quite balanced, so you can taste the winey side without hiding the other nuances. Based on this recreation, it is not hard to understand why Red Spot was a cult whiskey.
The finish is quite long and pleasing and the proof is fine as is--wouldn't add much water if that is how you take your whiskey. Once again, another fine bottling for this family of single pot still whiskeys.
Red Spot 15 Years Old Pot Still Irish Whiskey is good, but it’s not particularly interesting or deep and doesn’t really explode as a whiskey of its pedigree and work level should.
