Blackwood Toasted Rye Whiskey 105 Proof is a 7-year-old rye whiskey distilled by an undisclosed Indiana producer (MGP, we assume) and finished using Blackwood's signature toasting process. This involves a finish in three new toasted barrels from Kelvin Cooperage: a medium toast (no char) barrel, a char 4 barrel with toasted heads and a char 2 barrel with toasted heads. It has a suggested retail price of $95.99 per 750-milliliter bottle.

  • Nose:

The nose delivers soft aromas of toasted oak, gentle spice and sweetness. Dill, clove, cinnamon, mint, tea and French toast slathered with maple syrup.

  • Taste:

Toasted influence works nicely with the rye spice, which comes through as herbal, almost vegetal. Fresh mint, plus more pepper and dill. The toasted finish brings a nice big marshmallow note and some butterscotch sweetness to the party, which sits perfectly balanced with the spice.

  • Finish:

The finish is long with plenty of clove, pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg, followed by some lingering marshmallow fluff.

  • Overall:

Bangin' rye. It's super spicy, but that soft, tasty sweetness really balances things out and sets this rye apart from other Indiana products around the same age. No doubt about it, Blackwood is a brand to watch.
