Launched in the latter half of 2024, Loca Loka is the brainchild of Tollywood actor Rana Daggubati and musician Anirudh Ravichander. The tequila is imagined as a fusion of Indian and Mexican sensibilities — hence "Loca" (Spanish for "crazy") and "Loka" (Sanskrit for "world"). Highlands agaves are cooked in a low-pressure autoclave and extracted via roller mill before fermentation to the tune of classical music. The brand's Reposado is aged in a combination of French and American oak between four to six months.

  • Apricots, prunes, pear and orange combine with a hint of pistachio nuttiness. Classic reposado notes of caramel and vanilla are present, though subdued, and I'm getting some more of that unexpected smoke alongside spiced flavors of nutmeg and clove.

  • Nose:

Caramel, melon, lemon juice and pineapple. It's got this inviting, dark-yellow vibe stewing in the aroma, underlined by a wisp of smoke reminiscent of cedarwood. Dare I say, it almost reminds me of a scotch whisky.

  • Taste:

A gift bag of dried fruits. Apricots, prunes, pear and orange combine with a hint of pistachio nuttiness. Classic reposado notes of caramel and vanilla are present, though subdued, and I'm getting some more of that smoke alongside spiced flavors of nutmeg and clove.

  • Finish:

Medium-length finish filled with oak, fall fruits, honey and orange blossoms.

  • Overall:

A great reposado with an unexpected depth at every turn. The smoke and nuttiness are the biggest players on that front, adding just the right amount of complexity to elevate this beyond a cocktail mixer. It's too bad I'm trying this at the beginning of summer, because autumn is so clearly the season in mind for Loca Loka.
