‘Embark on a Voyage’: Clase Azul Teams up With Artist Eduardo Sarabia for Limited-Edition $5,500 Bottling

Over the decades, Clase Azul has developed a name synonymous with luxury. The brand’s bottles — a rainbow assortment of limited-edition releases decked out with painted accents, 24-karat gold finishes and ancestral beadwork  — are the ultra-expensive Pokemon cards of the spirits world.

As the year comes to a close, the brand has unveiled its latest bottling in collaboration with Mexican artist Eduardo Sarabia. Best known for his mixed-media work exploring folkloric iconography, Sarabia’s distinctive style is on full display in this glitzy $5,500 statement piece.

At its base you’ll find renditions of a rooster, parrot and goat paying homage to Sarabia’s home state of Sinaloa. Amidst the fish scales and worker’s tools there is also a Dos Peso coin stamped with Sarbaia’s birth year, 1976. Elswehere, gold detailing is aplenty.

The spirit contained within is a blend of unaged blanco, añejo aged in Russian oak casks and another añejo aged in amontillado sherry casks. So far as flavor, its said to balance aromas of walnut and tangerine peel with a palate of spearmint and agave nectar.

But perhaps that’s not the point. Huge of a brand as Clase Azul might be, it’s never necessarily been the go-to choice for die-hard tequila lovers. For those who pick up a bottle, it’s all about the presentation.

Appropriately, Clase Azul’s new release has been limited to just 450 bottles available exclusively at on-premise Clase Azul boutiques. The handful that have appeared for resale online are being hawked in the range of $11,999.
