Soft, sweet nose filled with jammy fruit notes from the Port influence, but the underlying bourbon characteristics are undeniable, offering maple, cornbread, brown sugar and cinnamon. The Port adds musky grape, plus green apple and melon. A nice cheesecake note emerges as you dive deeper, as well as tobacco.
On the palate, this bourbon has a moderate mouthfeel and a sweet profile that leads with classic bourbon notes — more cornbread, plus honey, walnuts, cinnamon and ginger. Big Port influence lies in the background: blackberry, maraschino cherry, blood orange, fig, cardamom. The back palate turns darker and oakier, with a pronounced tannic tea note and plenty of barrel char.
The finish leads with a big baked cornbread note, plus cinnamon, nutmeg and tannin. From there, it moves into dark chocolate-covered walnuts, almonds, raspberry jam and eggy custard.
A delightful, jammy bourbon. Balance is the name of the game here. The Port is present but far from domineering. There’s plenty of corn-heavy sweetness, baking spice and some bitter tannin — plus the jammy port influence. All of those disparate profiles come together really cohesively, and the blend drinks great at 101 proof.
