Curious No. 5 is a non-alcoholic smoked chocolate cherry cocktail produced in New York, inspired by an old fashioned. Crafted with dark cherry, elderberry, cacao, ginger, chicory and shatavari root, it is bottled in 340 ml (11.5 oz) format, with about 2.3 servings per bottle and no refined sugar. According to brand tasting notes, it offers a smoky, smooth profile with dark cherry, American oak and dark chocolate, finishing with a gentle warming sensation. It can be enjoyed stirred on the rocks, garnished with orange peel, cherry or rosemary. It typically retails for around $55 per four pack.

  • If you're expecting an Old Fashioned (which makes sense as that's how it is advertised), your expectations will be subverted. As a beverage, though, it's not half bad: savory, very smoky, salty and pleasant.

  • Nose:

The nose is heavy on smoked notes. Picture bacon or jamón fresh off the smoker, with some light vegetality joining the party.

  • Taste:

Savory and citrusy on the palate. Fresh cherry juice, lemon peel, sea salt, a touch of tomato juice, a bit of cayenne and a faint chocolate note.

  • Finish:

Sea salt leads a quick finish, joined by smoke and lemon peel.

  • Overall:

This doesn't taste anything like an Old Fashioned, nor is it all that chocolatey. If you're expecting an Old Fashioned (which makes sense as that's how it is advertised), your expectations will be subverted. As a beverage, though, it's not half bad: savory, very smoky, salty and pleasant.
