Remus Repeal Reserve Series VIII is a limited-edition straight bourbon whiskey produced at MGP in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Released in September 2024 with a suggested retail price of $99.99, it features a blend of three bourbons aged 10 to 17 years. The mashbill includes 67% 10-year bourbon with 36% rye, 24% 10-year bourbon with 21% rye and 9% 17-year bourbon with 21% rye. This edition, part of the annual Remus Repeal Reserve collection, pays homage to the repeal of Prohibition on December 5, 1933, and introduces a higher proportion of high-rye bourbon along with non-chill filtration.

  • It’s not particularly fruity unlike last year’s quite different Series VII (which I sampled side by side), but that’s no complaint. I actually like Series VIII a bit better.

  • Overall, it’s a flavorful, approachable whiskey with layers worth savoring, though it feels younger than its age statement suggests.

  • For me, this is easily one of their best offerings as far as value and quality are concerned.

  • Flavor is bitter/bittersweet with some peanut shells at the end. There's a solid length to the finish. Another good value if you can get at suggested retail prices.

  • A pleasant release, I love what RRR is and stands for each year and while this years is hotter than previous releases, it also steps up with quite a bit more complexity than predecessors as well.

  • This will be a treat for fans of extra-aged MGP high-rye bourbon mash bills, and feels like a pretty solid value at its MSRP given the state of the current whiskey market.

  • Remus Repeal Reserve VIII isn’t quite my favorite of the line. (That designation still belongs to version V.) It is, however, a subtle if noticeable improvement upon last year’s blend.

  • Nose:

Rich caramel, praline, some red fruits, toffee, honey and buttercream on the nose.

  • Taste:

Toffee on the palate, rich, layered, lots of pepper, ginger, cocoa and some graham cracker. Butterscotch, some moderate oak, proof sneaks right by.

  • Finish:

Long finish, more oak here, graham cracker, peanut butter cookies, cocoa, toffee and some pepper, the proof pops more on the palate, a ripple of heat as this takes off.

  • Overall:

A pleasant release, I love what RRR is and stands for each year and while this years is hotter than previous releases, it also steps up with quite a bit more complexity than predecessors as well.
