Grand Brulot draws on a 200-year-old tradition of blending coffee with cognac, inspired by the Café Brûlot cocktail from early 19th-century New Orleans. Crafted by the Tardy family in France, it combines 51% VSOP cognac, aged four to five years and selected by fifth-generation cellar master Christoph Tardy, with 49% Ecuadorian Robusta coffee. The blend is aged in oak for an additional six months, yielding a liqueur that delivers the equivalent of one shot of espresso per serving.

  • But the palate delivers a wallop of booze, rounded out with bold black cherry, dark chocolate, vanilla and espresso, finishing with a flurry of cocoa and pulverized cinnamon bark.

  • That said, I would like to have seen a stronger coffee influence here. In Grand Brulot, the coffee comes across more as a distinctly secondary element (and one which feels a bit overcooked).

  • What makes it excel is a minute hint of sugar. This is more in line with a coffee liquor than a overly sweetened liqueur.

  • This is one of the most interesting coffee liqueurs I've tried thus far, and it's no surprise that it makes a lively Espresso Martini.

  • Nose:

Right away, I'm hit with a smack of coffee bean aroma, paired with undercurrents of cocoa, marzipan, peanuts, cherries and apricot.

  • Taste:

The palate echoes — and amplifies — what's on the nose: black coffee, a roasted nuttiness and stone fruit. The cognac foundation rushes in soon after with raisin, dry oak and sweet toffee.

  • Finish:

Milk chocolate, vanilla and aged brandy dominate the lengthy, spiced finish.

  • Overall:

This is one of the most interesting coffee liqueurs I've tried thus far, and it's no surprise that it makes a lively Espresso Martini. Of course, enjoying it simply over ice is just as delightful!
