An exciting release, Trifecta is a bit older than Blue Run Spirits' usual blends. Blue Run Whiskey Director and Wild Turkey alum Shaylyn Gammon blended 6- (46%), 8- (22%) and 9-year-old (32%) bourbons for this release. Released in August 2023, this is the first whiskey for Blue Run Spirits since being acquired by Molson Coors

  • While the nose can come across as a bit off-putting, the palate really opens things up and lets the whiskey’s brighter elements shine, tempering any thoughts of austerity.

  • The bourbon is well-blended and the disclosure of its various ages and percentages is respectable, but its high asking price will ultimately be its sticking point.

  • A great showing for what I anticipate being a new chapter for Blue Run: older stocks, same great blending.

  • Nose:

From the nose alone, it is clear to see that this is a new whiskey for Blue Run. There’s more oak, more baking spice, more honey and an extra level of auspicious dessert on the table.

  • Taste:

The palate is pleasant and well-rounded. The mouthfeel is nicely structured. Caramel candies, cinnamon, honey and a touch of strong oak pulling the palate together. While Blue Run’s previous core releases have always balanced youth and complexity well, it’s very clear that throwing older stocks in the mix never hurts, either. Rich brown sugar, a dash of spicy pepper, apple butter, faint cherry and espresso, and a scoop of spiced pears before oak comes calling.

  • Finish:

Moderate finish. It's got legs and leans on brown sugar and sweet cinnamon to see this pour off.

  • Overall:

A great showing for what I anticipate being a new chapter for Blue Run: older stocks, same great blending.
