  • 15 Stars Three Ports Fine-Aged Bourbon is a precision-crafted finished bourbon that breaks new ground and, most importantly, succeeds where most port finished bourbons fail.

  • I love sweeter, fruitier whiskeys (and Port wine) and even I found Three Ports to be pushing the envelope on that front.

  • I found this whiskey to be particularly enjoyable at its 105 proof, where the sweetness is present but well-managed.

  • Whether it is the combination of the trio of Port types or that they found some very good cask material to work with, that plus the combination of mature and middle aged bourbon produced a real winner.

  • Nose:

Rich, delicious nose that has plenty of port, but the port doesn't overwhelm. Butterscotch, strawberry jelly, caramel, red grape.

  • Taste:

Tobacco, tannin and vanilla cake collide with heaps of grape-forward port influence.

  • Finish:

The finish is long. It opens with port galore, some white wine-esque acidity as well as a buttery character that reminds me of a Chardonnay. After a while, soft and sweet notes come through: butterscotch, marshmallow, crème brûlée.

  • Overall:

This is gorgeous stuff from 15 STARS. It's absolutely delicious and nicely balanced. I'm very impressed. I've tasted many a port-finished bourbon, and a lot of them aren't great, losing the distillate entirely in the port. This is not that. The port is very prevalent and leads the way, but it intertwines with bourbon to form a wonderful profile.
