On Wednesday, Painted Lady Gin, produced by Oregon-based distillery Pilot House Distilling, was deemed the “Best Domestic Gin” of 2023 by Wine & Spirits Magazine.
Held annually, the media outlet’s “Best of the Year Spirits” competition is held through a series of blind tastings, assessed by panels of Los Angeles bartenders and mixologists. More than 100 spirits were sampled this year, with Wine & Spirits Magazine’s spirits editor Alissa Bica selecting the 14 finalists based on taste, structure and the “strong emotional responses” each elicited.
“Less traditionally juniper-forward and more wildly herbaceous than most gins, this fascinated our panelists, who called it out for avid gin drinkers wanting to try something different and exciting,” Wine & Spirits Magazine said of Painted Lady Gin in its glowing review.
Designated as a new American-style expression, Painted Lady Gin first debuted in 2013. The spirit’s award-winning botanical mix comprises juniper, lavender, rose hips, chamomile, orris root, coriander, lemon zest, peppercorns and cucumber.
According to the brand, the 45%-ABV gin offers “floral highlights and peppered back notes,” making it ideal for serving it up in a martini or sipping it neat.

Joining Pilot House Distilling on Wine & Spirits Magazine’s “Best of the Year Spirits” list is Glendalough Distillery with its Wild Botanicals Irish Gin. Described as feeling like “a cool mountain breeze after a rain,” Glendalough Wild Botanicals Irish Gin was deemed the “Best Imported Gin” of 2023.
